The National Oil Company (NOC) was preparing for a decade of growth, with significantly higher rig demand to support more wells. Leadership preferred to own rather than rent. But ownership required long-term commitments.


Historically, rig planning had been deterministic and single-scenario. When leadership requested multiple scenarios, planners generated low and high cases by toggling certain projects on and off. The result: extreme gaps between scenarios and limited confidence to commit.


What was needed was a realistic range of rig demand over 10 years, constrained by budgets and feasibility, and a supply plan that balanced owned vs. rented rigs while accounting for retirements, lead times, and uncertainty.

We worked with the NOC to develop an AI-assisted rig planning solution that brought clarity to both demand and supply.


The tool explored thousands of scenarios across exploration, unconventionals, and development projects - delivering a realistic demand range for rigs over the next decade. It then mapped that demand against rig retirement schedules and lead times for procuring or renting new rigs.


Planners could test strategies for ownership vs. rental, and even explore “over-spec” options that add flexibility to cover multiple rig types. The result was a transparent, scenario-based view of rig demand and supply that executives could trust as the basis for long-term commitments.
