Deciding the drilling sequence for a multi-year rig portfolio is one of the most critical planning challenges in upstream. Each project competes for scarce rig time, and the “right” sequence depends on multiple, often conflicting drivers: exploration commitments, new oil and gas volumes, cost efficiency, project readiness, fiscal agreements, and security of supply.


Traditionally, these decisions were dominated by opinion and manual spreadsheets. Meetings often stalled in debate, with limited ability to test scenarios or understand the full trade-offs. The result: frustration, inefficiency, and uncertainty over whether the agreed sequence was the best one.

We worked with a Shell asset to digitise and transform their rig sequence planning workflow, and developed an AI-assisted solution that:


  • Encoded key rules and constraints (exploration follow-ups, IAP conflicts, readiness, fiscal commitments).

  • Generated and optimised rig sequences across multiple business drivers - cost, new reserves, lifecycle value, and exploration balance.

  • Enabled built-in scenario modelling, so planners could anchor certain projects, adjust assumptions, and instantly see the trade-offs.

  • Integrated cross-checks with weather, turnaround data, and vessel requirements to ensure realistic plans.


The result was a stable, transparent sequence planning process that supported proactive change management and stronger stakeholder alignment.
