Making strategic choices for mature offshore platforms is never straightforward. Options often involve major investments with widely different technical, commercial, and ESG implications.


For one of Neptune’s assets, choices ranged from transforming it into a mixed oil and gas hub to focusing primarily on gas development. Each strategy came with distinct trade-offs in lifecycle value, complexity, cessation of production (CoP) timing, and carbon footprint.


Traditional approaches struggled to capture this breadth. The result: uncertainty over whether decisions were aligned with both short-term efficiency and long-term resilience.

We developed a decision support tool to give Neptune a clear view of the strategic pathways for the asset.


The tool systematically explored combinations of future choices, including:


  • Regional hub development for oil and gas vs. a more gas-focused hub.

  • Investment levels and sequencing of riser towers, host modifications, and tie-ins.

  • Opportunities for OPEX rationalisation, partner alignment, and electrification.


Each scenario was evaluated across economics, CoP timing, complexity, and carbon exposure. By filtering out unattractive strategies, the tool revealed two distinct strategic groups:


  • Maximising reserves and lifecycle value.

  • Maximising investment efficiency with earlier CoP.


The capability also supported what-if testing — such as the outcomes of exploration wells, changes in tariffs, or shifts in partner negotiations.
