The challenge

The challenge

In the North Sea, NAM needed to optimise vessel planning for well interventions and offshore operations. Workboats servicing normally unmanned installations had to be scheduled and routed efficiently - while navigating unpredictable weather and harsh sea conditions.

The traditional short-term planning cycle was a constant puzzle: balancing operational priorities across teams, adapting to shifting activity portfolios, and working within narrow platform access windows under uncertain conditions.

Too often, daily planning meetings were dominated by opinions rather than facts. The result was inefficiency, lost opportunities, and decisions made without full confidence.

Solution

Dashboard titled “NAM Kasteelborg sequence planning” with a map of offshore sites in the North Sea on the left, and on the right project metrics, a Gantt chart of scheduled activities, and a table listing work activities, priorities, locations, durations, and mission dates.

We built a Vessel Planning tool that transformed NAM’s short-term scheduling process from opinion-driven to fact-based.

Instead of manually stitching together vessel routes, the tool automatically generated optimal 14-day schedules - balancing operational priorities, gas production, and platform access windows, all within the constraints of forecasted weather and sea conditions.

Planners could instantly compare scenarios, understand trade-offs, and see the impact of shifting activities - while staying in control through manual overrides. Hours of debate were replaced by clear, data-driven options in minutes.

The result: faster, more confident decisions that delivered safer, more efficient operations at lower cost.

Results

Decisions in minutes, not hours

daily planning cycles accelerated with fact-based options on demand.

Safer, more efficient operations

optimal routes reduced unnecessary sailing, cutting costs and risks.

Confidence and control

planners stayed in the lead, with full transparency and manual override options.
