The challenge

The challenge

On the Norwegian Continental Shelf, there are thousands of wells - and several hundred well slots are no longer producing or injecting. For operators, the question is how to quickly identify which of these dormant slots could be reinstated or re-used.

The traditional screening process is slow, fragmented, and highly manual. Valuable opportunities for sidetracks or reinstatement risk being overlooked, leaving asset teams without a clear view of the full development potential.

Solution

Dashboard interface for well management. The top left shows a table of well slots under the GULLFAKS project with slot names, IDs, categories, and production statuses (Active/Inactive). The bottom left shows a time series plot of oil (green), water (red), and gas (blue) production from August 1996 to 2022. The right side displays a detailed well barrier schematic with primary and secondary barrier elements, and another slot table for cross-reference.
Dashboard with multiple oil field performance charts: •	Top left: A pie chart showing proportional oil metrics (colored slices represent different categories). •	Top right: Bar chart of oil reserves (m³) across wells such as Oseberg, Snorre, and Troll (largest reserves at Troll t1-04). •	Bottom left: Stacked bar chart of oil reinstatement potential (m³/day) across fields Troll, Snorre, Gullfaks, and Oseberg (Troll showing highest potential). •	Bottom right: Bar chart of estimated current oil rate (m³/day) for individual wells, with the 34/4 A-D H-01 well having the highest rate (~568 m³/day).

We developed a slot screening and categorisation tool for Petoro to give a clear, portfolio-wide view of both dormant and producing slots on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Instead of relying on manual checks or scattered spreadsheets, the tool connects directly to Petoro’s database and updates charts with the latest well information. Users can filter by project or facility, bulk upload schematics, or drill down into an individual slot to add details.

Crucially, the tool combines automation with user control. Asset teams can add their own notes and analysis, and override automated classifications when needed. This ensures decisions remain transparent and grounded in expert judgment, while still benefiting from automation at scale.

The result is a flexible, intuitive workflow that makes it easy to classify non-producing wells, explore sidetrack opportunities, and build reinstatement scenarios. Portfolio charts highlight reinstatement potential at a glance, so teams can move beyond guesswork and focus on the options with the highest value.
